Chaurchan Puja 2025 – Mithila’s Moonlit Festival

The moon shone brightly, the courtyard was cleaned and my mother’s voice resounded with prayers. I consider Chaurchan Puja to be one of our culture’s most spiritually and emotionally fulfilling festivals since I have a strong connection to Mithila customs.

I now want to take you on a trip through all that I have discovered, experienced and cherished about this lovely Maithil festival as Chaurchan Puja 2025 draws near. This page will engross you in the holy spirit of Chaurchan Puja. Regardless of whether you are from Bihar are learning about Indian culture or are simply interested in this uncommon moon festival.

When is Chaurchan Puja 2025?

The planned date of Chaurchan Puja is Tuesday 26th August, 2025. On the fourth day of the light half period of Bhadrapada during the moon’s ascending phase. This sacred celebration is held. Just after Ganesh Chaturthi.

What is Chaurchan Puja?

The Mithila region of Bihar celebrates this unusual holiday. Which is also known as Chaturthi Chandra Puja and Chaurchan Puja (particularly in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Sitamarhi and adjacent districts). On this day and married women worship the Moon God (Chandra Deva) and Lord Ganesha for the prosperity and well-being of their families with particularly their husbands and kids.

Why is the Moon Worshipped in Chaurchan Puja?

There is an intriguing tale behind this in Hindu mythology. Lord Ganesha punished Chandra Dev (Moon God) on Ganesh Chaturthi for giggling at his appearance. It was believed that anyone who looked at the moon on Chaturthi would be unfairly blamed for something they hadn’t done.

Later the Lord Krishna performed Chaurchan Puja. Which included praying to the moon, presenting sweets and making an arghya (water offering) in order to lift the curse. Since then, women have been preparing a special meal and offering it to the moon at moonrise as part of the Mithila tradition.

How I Celebrated Chaurchan Puja in 2024 – A Personal Memory

The preparations for Chaurchan Puja start early in the morning at my residence. The initial assignment? The angan (courtyard) is being cleaned and decorated. Even though it may seem odd to some. Our tradition views it as shuddh (pure) which is why I still grin when I think of how we sprinkled cow dung mixed with water.

The courtyard was illuminated by lamps, rangoli and exquisitely arranged banana leaves that contained the bhog (offerings) by sunset. My granny put in:

  • Kheer
  • Puri
  • Malpua
  • Bananas
  • Paan-Supari
  • Raw rice (akshat)

During this puja, she always made dahi-chura and a must-have dish made with curd and flattened rice that has special meaning.

Chanting mantras we offered arghya and set the meal in front of Chandra Dev as the moon rose. Watching the moonlight fall over offerings as our family prayed together was a peaceful time that felt quite beautiful.

  • Elderly women reciting traditional songs.
  • Girls laughing while attempting to create the square puja symbol known as chaur.
  • Men reverently and silently observed the rituals.
  • Youngsters attempting to see the moon from the roofs.
