Date of Krishna Janmashtami 2025:
16th August 2025. The event is expected to have big celebrations and carry strong cultural meaning.
How I Celebrate Krishna Janmashtami in Bihar
A few years ago if someone had asked me where to experience Krishna Janmashtami in the most meaningful way. I would have probably mentioned Mathura or Vrindavan. But after celebrating Janmashtami in Bihar my view completely changed.
Bihar has its own unique way of celebrating Lord Krishna’s birthday.
It’s not just about performing rituals—it’s about showing deep love and devotion.
The strong family ties and traditions passed down through generations play a big part. I planned my entire August trip around the Krishna Janmashtami festival in Bihar and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
Let me share with you how I celebrated Krishna Janmashtami in Bihar this year. Step by step just as I did.

Preparing for Janmashtami: The Excitement Begins Early
People start getting ready for Janmashtami at least a week before the main day in Bihar. The markets become very lively with bright decorations and images of Krishna with flutes and peacock feathers. As I walked through the streets of Patna and Gaya. I saw shops full of Jhulan (swings) for Bal Gopal. Colorful lights and nice clothes for the Krishna idols.
What I Did:
- I bought a small Bal Gopal statue and dressed it up with new clothes a crown and some jewelry.
- I also got some mishri and makhan which are Krishna’s favorite treats.
- I made a Jhanki with fake cows gopis and tiny pictures of Vrindavan.
Fasting and Devotion: The Spiritual Side
I started my day early taking a bath before the sun rose. Which is usual here. Most people who follow religious practices in Bihar observe a Nirjala fast. Which means they don’t eat or drink anything except water on Janmashtami. If that’s too hard they can choose a Phalahar vrat instead where they eat only fruits and milk.
My Experience:
- I fasted on fruits all day.
- My morning was spent reading the Bhagavad Gita and listening to devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna.
- I went to nearby temples where the priests told stories about Krishna’s birth. His playful actions and his teachings.
Visiting the Temples of Bihar on Janmashtami
Bihar has some lovely temples that are devoted to Lord Krishna. On the occasion of Janmashtami. These temples are beautifully decorated just like royal palaces. The ISKCON temples in Patna and Gaya. The Banke Bihari Temple in Muzaffarpur and the Thakur Bari in Ranchi. Which is close to the Bihar border attract thousands of worshippers who come to pay their respect.
What I Loved:
- I watched the Dahi Handi competition at the local temple. Groups of young boys formed tall human pyramids. Climbing on each other’s shoulders to reach and smash the clay pot filled with butter hanging high above.
- I saw children performing Rasa Lila and dressed as Radha and Krishna.
- The temple was full of people chanting “Hare Krishna Hare Rama” and the air smelled like flowers with camphor and incense.

Midnight Celebration: The Moment of Krishna’s Birth
Janmashtami is special because the main prayer ceremony takes place at midnight. Which is the exact time when Krishna was born.
How We Did It:
- We sang the story of Krishna’s birth called Krishna Janm Katha as the clock approached 12
- The air echoed with the sound of temple bells and the blowing of conch shells. While devotees joyfully chanted “Nand Ke Ghar Anand Bhayo, Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki!”
- placed at the center of the celebration. The tiny idol was gently placed in a cradle. Intricately decorated with flowers with lights and vibrant cloth.
- Everyone gently rocked the cradle while singing lullabies to Krishna.
- The priest performed a special ritual bath called Abhishek and using milk with curd, honey, ghee and holy water from the Ganges.
- This moment made me feel a strange shiver down my spine.
- It felt like I was there at Krishna’s birth.
Special Janmashtami Prasad in Bihar
No celebration in Bihar is complete without food and Janmashtami is no exception!
What We Made at Home:
- Panchamrit is a mixture made of milk, honey, curd, ghee and sugar.
- Makhan Mishri is made from butter and rock sugar.
- Singhare ke Ladoo and Sabudana Khichdi were served to people who are fasting.
- Kheer with Malpua and Peda were given as Prasad after midnight.
In this celebration, offering prasad and sharing festive meals with neighbors and loved ones is a cherished tradition. In fact many homes in Bihar become mini temples on this day.

Dahi Handi: Bihar’s Traditional Twist
Dahi Handi is well-known in Maharashtra but Bihar also has its own version of the game. In places like Patna Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur and young people from local clubs take part in Matki Phod events.
What I Saw:
- Groups of boys known as Govinda Pathaks built human pyramids to reach and break a pot that was hanging from a rope.
- In this celebration offering prasad and sharing festive meals with neighbors and loved ones is a cherished tradition.
- The winners received prizes such as money or sweets but the main thing was having fun and working together as a team.
Creating a Krishna Corner at Home
One thing I really enjoyed in 2025 was creating a Krishna Corner at home. It became the main place where we celebrated.
How You Can Do It:
- Put your Bal Krishna idol in a nicely decorated swing.
- Add flowers and little cows and butter pots to make it look special.
- Light up diyas and incense sticks in the evening.
- Play gentle flute music or Krishna songs to feel more spiritual.
Involving Children: The Joy of Dressing Up
Kids are very important during Janmashtami in Bihar. Every year families dress their little kids as Krishna or Radha. Schools and community places often have dress-up contests.
I helped my niece get dressed as Laddu Gopal. She wore a peacock feather crown and held a flute. It was touching to see the kids in their small dhotis and lehengas.
Why Celebrating Janmashtami in Bihar Feels Special
Celebrating Janmashtami in Bihar is more than just doing rituals—it’s also about bringing people together, showing devotion and taking pride in the culture.
No matter if you’re in a small village or a big city like Patna. Every home gets ready for Krishna’s birthday. The dancing, the prayers and breaking the fast with family at midnight are all special moments you’ll never forget.
Final Thoughts: My 2025 Janmashtami Takeaway
As someone who has celebrated Janmashtami in various parts of India. I can genuinely say that Bihar’s way of celebrating Krishna’s birthday is special and deeply touching.
If you’re looking for a spiritual with cultural and joyful experience consider celebrating Janmashtami in Bihar in 2025.
